Trending Coin of the Week - Optimism (OP)
Optimism is an L2 (Layer 2) blockchain that uses optimistic rollups and is built on Ethereum. Layer 2 blockchains are designed to help Ethereum scale by taking on some of its workload and running in parallel with it. With the help of fraud-proofs, optimistic rollups reduce latency by 10x-100x. Also, since Optimism lacks a mempool, transactions are processed or denied instantaneously. Optimism maintains a minimalistic codebase and makes limited use of existing codebases.
Recently, an attacker stole 20M OP coins, only to return 17M back and 1M to Ethereum founder, Vitalik Buterin. The hacker gave an on-chain message: “Hello, Vitalik, I believe in you, just want to know your opinion on this. [By the way], help to verify the return address and I will return the remaining after you. And hello Wintermute, sorry, I only have 18M and this is what I can return. Stay Optimistic!”
